You would only need 480 volts if you had a HUGE rectifier (power supply) to plate something the size of a car.
To do a true chrome plate of steel is possible at home in your garage but requires several steps to get from steel to chrome. Not cheap but you can do it.
If you want it to look like chrome, but doesnt actually have to BE chrome, check out the very affordable "Copy Chrome" plating kit at

I have used their copper plating supplies and have had good success with a little practice. They not only supply materials and equipment, they also give good instructions and will provide customer support.
Please Please Please, read instructions carefully. Goggles, rubber gloves, apron etc strongly recommended.
I need a name for a lawn and property maintenance company along with a logo. Any ideas out there?

Chrome plating is not the type of process you can do at home. Special equipment is required to do plating. It is a chemical process and not something that should be attempted by the untrained.
Further, chrome waste is highly regulated and must be disposed in accordance with strictly monitored laws.
